Historical Homes of Fraser Coast

Twenty-seven homes appear in the publication Historical homes of Wide Bay/Phyllis Mary Collet 1983 Maryborough, Qld.:Burnett Publ., 1983 which is located in the Fraser Coast Libraries local history collection. In this publication Phyllis has sketched homes around the area.

Maryborough Mayor James Stafford had the residence Oonooraba built on the design of architect George Henry Male Addison. This home is the first to feature in this publication. This large wooden house located in Maryborough has original pine and beech panelling and fireplaces with mirrored surrounds.
Brooklyn House, Howard is also featured.This house was built for William Rankin by Howard carpenter, Stephen Ward, in 1890.It is built mainly of cedar and beech and was originally set on three acres of land with gardens, formal drives, bowling green and tennis court. Four marble fireplaces, a grand staircase were also a feature.
A gate connected the garden to the local Anglican churchyard next door. The house was the centrepiece of social life in Howard in its heyday and is famous for its association with Dame Annabel Rankin, who became the first female senator in Queensland and is recognised as a pioneer in Australian women's politics. She was a successful State and Federal parliamentarian who, after representing the electorate of Burrum for many years in the Queensland State Parliament, became a Liberal Senator for Queensland from 1946-71. source Brooklyn House. Council has adopted a Local Heritage Register  in accordance with the requirements and processes stipulated in the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 on 6 April 2011.The Local Heritage Register is progressively updated to add, remove and amend details for places of significance.The register currently has a total of 161 places of significance and reflects aspects of local and regional cultural history.Both Oonooraba and Brooklyn House are among the homes registered.More information can be found here

Ilfracombe also known as Lambert Hyne House; Blairholme source Queensland Heritage Register
lfracombe was constructed between 1893 and 1895 for Blair Wilson. The home was then owned by the Hyne family. lfracombe overlooks, to the east, a reach of the Mary River. This home can be found on this register here .
