Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum and the story of the T.S.S. Maheno

Kay French wears many hats for the community.
Kay French wears many hats in the community, one of which is curating at the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum. History has been an abiding interest throughout her life but she only found the time to work in this field when she retired and moved to Hervey Bay.
She thinks her love of the past was encouraged by her mother. “My mother was interested in history. We moved a lot and my mother joined the local associations in the towns. She knew lots of people throughout the state and her keen interest in events helped her stay connected with her community”.

The museum is a fun place to visit.

The Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum commenced in 1974 and Kay joined in 2005. “It is a very welcoming and friendly establishment”, Kay enthused.  Kay has been involved in curating and mounting displays.

“A great deal of factual information is required”, Kay said. “Museum files, local people and computers are a good way to start learning”, she continued. “Recently we have been researching the beaching of the T.S.S. Maheno on Fraser Island, in preparation for displaying an exhibition on this event. It is now open to the public to view and it will be continually changed and upgraded as more information becomes available”.

Kay emphasised she is part of a team “The museum is entirely managed by volunteers who are unstinting in giving their time and expertise. It continually amazes me just how skilful and talented our members are”, she enthused.

Kay, thank you so much for all that you contribute to the Hervey Bay Museum and community and for being a vital, yet humble part of a great team. I am very keen to come to the Hervey Bay Museum again when next visiting the area.

This is a great display. I saw it at the Library a few days ago. My kids went to the museum on a school excursion last term and the old buildings and wares were fascinating and the staff very knowledgeable.
