The First Urangan Point State School

The First Urangan Point State School Source: Queensland Heritage Register
According to the Queensland Heritage Register this single-storeyed timber building was constructed in 1916 as the first Urangan Point State School. The Heritage register states
European settlement of the Urangan area dates at least to the 1860s, when timber getters moved through the area. In the late 1860s and early 1870s the area was thrown open for selection, with Maryborough solicitor Edward Corser taking up the bulk of the Urangan township blocks, first surveyed in September 1867. A small fishing industry was established at Urangan Point in the late 19th century, but the main impetus for the town's development was the construction of the rail link to Maryborough (opened 19 December 1913), and the deep water jetty at Urangan Point (erected 1913-1917). In November 1915, the township consisted of a station master's residence, boarding house, hotel, and several small stores.

In 1915 a committee put together a formal application for the establishment of a state school at Urangan Point. The suggested enrolment was about 24. According to the Heritage register
The Urangan community already had access to two schools in the district: Pialba, approximately 4 miles distant, and Torquay, just over 2 miles. Most Urangan children attended the overcrowded Torquay School, which was accommodating over twice the number of pupils for which it had been designed, and was in urgent need of additional accommodation.

A shelter shed was erected in 1928 so the children could get out of the rain and sun while waiting for the teacher. In 1931, severe overcrowding of over 40 pupils resulted in a contract for a new building. In 1931 to Messrs McKewen and Eckstein with a price of £312 won, and the new building was ready for occupation by mid-February 1932 (Maryborough Chronicle). Students in grades 1-3 remained in the early building, and the older students moved into the new building.

Relocation occurred in 1977. Some renovations including a new roof have taken place and it is still used as a music room.
