Fraser Coast Libraries partnered with The University of Queensland Confucius Institute to host Chinese Craft and Tai Chi workshops. These were run to highlight the considerable contribution Australian Chinese people have made to the Fraser Coast, particularly in pastoral work from around 1840.
It is a little known fact that many Indentured Chinese Labourers came to the Fraser Coast and worked as shepherds. These men were mainly between 18 and 30 and unlike those coming from Canton for the Gold Rush in Gympie, stayed after their five year indentured period. They were instrumental in producing large consignments of wool for distribution through the Maryborough Port.
Chinese shopkeepers, market gardeners and fisherpeople also contributed to the prosperity of the Fraser Coast.
